Ako for parents

Ako is a New Zealand study site for NCEA and first-year health science. Your child's notes, flashcards, practice questions and study plan are in one place, with a tutor when they want one. Meet the people behind it: About Dom and Jack.

How it helps

Ako takes the admin out of studying: gathering notes, making flashcards and planning the week. Your child's time goes on the learning itself.

Practice questions show what is needed to get to the next grade, part by part. Flashcards come back on the day they are due, so what was learned is remembered at exam time.

Tutors you can trust

Every tutor on Ako is police vetted before anyone can book them. Ako interviews each tutor and checks their referees and qualifications first.

Sessions are booked and paid through Ako. For a student under 18, a parent can see every tutoring message, booking and bill.

Ako has a Child Safeguarding Policy, and anyone can report a concern to Ako's Safeguarding Lead.

What it costs

Ako is free to start: notes, PDFs and your own flashcard decks, free for as long as you like.

Every new account gets two free weeks of Pro, with every feature. After that, Pro is $29 a month and Max is $59 a month, or pay yearly for less. See every plan.

Tutoring is paid for separately, at the tutor's own hourly rate, with a $3 booking fee once per booking.

Cancel any time

A membership can be cancelled from the account page at any time. It stops at the end of the period already paid, and nothing more is charged.

A tutoring session can be cancelled or moved free of charge up to 24 hours before it starts. The Tutoring Booking Terms have the details.

About Dom and Jack

Ako was started by Dom Edmond and Jack Clough, two fourth year medical students at Christchurch Hospital who tutor.

Jack has tutored more than 50 students through NCEA and first year health science. Dom teaches as an academic tutor at Christ's College.

We worked hard at school and in first year, but we didn't always work smart. Ako is the tool we wish we'd had, so a student's hard work pays off.
